That is a good summary by Allen of the state of the Bee-L community and the issues we as moderators have to address. The majority of the contributions are valuable, respectful and we feel readers get something from them. Contributions with an emphasis on adding knowledge, experience, new perspectives, or starting a topic with a good question are the most welcome. Those that sound like a direct reply to an individual tend to devolve into lesser contributions. There are only a few that are either very off topic, disregard simple formatting requests, or have in them obvious, implied or unintentional combative language. Those require judgement calls.
When Aaron Morris fell ill he asked Allen Dick to take over ownership of the list and moderation. Allen requested that I assist him. I reluctantly agreed. It has been a bit over two years. Sometimes it seems longer. Most of the time the effort seems worth the time out of our retirements and other interests.
The web interface feature of Bee-L is a way of avoiding being inundated with emails. The subscription feature allows one to tweak settings for getting every post as an email, or not. The web interface displays the chronological list of posts and allows one to read whatever string or topic may be of interest and avoid others. It also allows one to select a a post and type a reply that does not end up with formatting problems. The response can be saved as a draft and improved or posted later. Also, searching the vast archives for topics that many times have been discussed at length before can reveal quite a treasure trove.
There are close to a thousand subscribers to Bee-L from many walks of life and countries. We would like to see more posts from others besides the frequent posters, and from different regions. Sometimes a comment or question that may appear simple at first ends up starting a valuable exchange of knowledge. Join in.
