Re. BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AND ERADICATION OF FERAL HONEY BEE COLONIES ON SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, okay, I reconsidered by use of the term “efficient.” The “biological control” strategy (introduction of Varroa) started in December 1993. Swarm numbers declined dramatically in 1996. HOWEVER, it appears that honey bee colonies survived until July 2004, which is when survivor honey bees were seen on rosemary plants. So, given this experience, what’s the prognosis for terminating feral colonies in NSW (assuming there are any) so as to prevent the establishment of a Varroa reservoir and transmission to managed stock?
