Once the queen is forced into erratic laying by scattered pollen cells, dispersed drone cells, crystallized honey etc., it is difficult for her to get back into laying in an efficient spiral patterns. Chaos is self perpetuating and it is not easy to reset. The interruption of formic acid probably contributes to a partial reset. I was forced to do a shakedown onto new frames due to EFB and that tidies up the patterns. We probably might actually do the colonies a favor by a bit more ruthless culling.
