Completely agree... that's why we need to develop good scientist/beekeeper partnerships and use funding opportunities appropriately. The other challenging topic is who and how should the research funding (public) be spent. Private funding is a whole different discussion.
I have completed multiple funding application (CAP - Canadian Agricultural Program and under the previous program). The challenge is the funding committees are typically never made up of beekeepers. My last application was fortunately approved but the committee this time had 2 other beekeepers. I was also "required" to associate myself to the Yukon Agricultural Association (not their ask) to get my funding. So now ~10% of my funds will go to "administration" (I do all the paper work and most of my time is as an in kind donation). These are government requirements.
I digress :) !!
