One of my hobbies is etymology (besides entomology, of course. I was puzzled by this phrase and wondered if it is a regionalism or a spelling error. Roaching *can* mean, shaving hair very closely, derived from "roaching the mane" referring to cutting a horse's mane down so that it bristles, or stands up straight. Which, in turn, derives from "roached back" which refers to an arched back, not a good thing in a horse. Also, used in reference to other animals:
