SMR was determined to be due to VSH, thus renamed.  Baton Rouge Lab found
VSH to be heritable, but to hold it, one must control matings.  Most queen
producers allowed them to outmate to their own stock, and didn't maintain
selection.
That's why I"m experimenting to see whether monitoring all my colonies for
mite buildup, and then only breeding from those that exhibit resistance
(but not specifically selecting for VSH) is possible with open mating,
where my selected stock flood the drone pool.
I may be collaborating with another researcher this summer to screen my
breeders for the VSH trait (as opposed to FKH (freeze kill hygiene).
