once the adult selective hygienic behavior towards reproductive mites
that produced the appearance of suppression of mite reproduction in
brood was discovered in that population of bees:

Suppression of mite reproduction by some factor in brood may still be a
mechanism of resistance in other bees. However, studies evaluating
brood that has been in the presence of adult workers during development
may confuse true SMR for VSH. The way to separate the two effects is
to place brood once it is capped in incubators, separate from adult
workers.
