Except for NWCs and a few hybrids with NWC genetics, which overwinter just fine in scary-looking grapefruit-sized clusters.

Except for places where it is so damp (I'm looking at you Norfolk VA - Atlantic City NJ Coast west to Route 95) you have to vent in winter, or you end up with bee-cicles - bees covered in ice.

Except where it is very dry (and/or very cold), and the bees' own respiration moisture needs to be conserved within the hive so the bees can re-use it
If there was one universal answer to any aspect of beekeeping, there'd be maybe 5 books, no need for discussion forums, and I'd have gotten bored and wandered off by about 1996.
Everything about bees is very simple, until it suddenly is not.
