> Sampling methodology and timing of sampling were key factors. Two
different research groups using different methods and sampling periods
often ended up with diametrically different results

With bugs timing is everything.

If you went to North Bay, Ontario at the right time

 north bay shad flies at DuckDuckGo
<https://duckduckgo.com/?q=north+bay+shad+flies&ia=web>

You would see swarms of these big bugs everywhere and a week later people
would be sweeping the stinking, rotting remains like leaves.

Three weeks later and the rest of the year no one would know they ever
existed.
