Many of these knots and hitches were invented when the only rope was hemp. I think that some of them do not hold as well with modern 'plastic' ropes, so we should be very careful before we put our trust in them.

Personally I double loop the rope and if I am traveling any distance recheck the tightness of the road after driving a mile or two. From my days in the US Navy 1) a good knot is one that ties and unties easily and 2) plastic rope is to be avoided since there is no way to determine at what point it will fail in a catastrophic manner (that is you can put tension on plastic rope and at what poundage it will separate is quite random).
