Here is a simple temperature comparison between rack vs no rack with the average control hive temperature included. (Box Tmax, Box Tmin and Box Taverage Vs outside T and empty control hive Taverage (5 sensors))
Note: Control box has 60lbs of honey frames in it
The Tmax on the non slatted hive is very "spiky" indicating more heating events (more active heater bees) but also the cluster location is less centred in the no slatted rack colony. So there might be some edge effect where centre sensor is in centre and inside of mantle.
Brood rearing can clearly be seen in slatted colony into early November.
Impact of thermal lag/insulation can be seen when comparing all 3 colonies (Rack, no rack and control).
Especially during rapid heating and cooling outside. The last December event is likely due to solar effect. It was a nice sunny cold day. 1st in weeks. Control RED line clearly shows that all the peaks and lows are reduced or eliminated. The Red line and Grey line parallel each other. The cold temperature is always somewhere along the sidewalls.
So the moral of the story, if you pull too much honey in fall or you rely on candyboards for supplemental feed because of light weight boxes, you will not experience the benefits of thermal buffering, thermal buffering is enhanced with additional insulation. I tested this back in 2019 by comparing a wood colony to a poly hive with 30-40lbs of honey.
