> If anyone knows of good papers dealing with egg moving by workers, please share. I'd very much like to read them.

Winston appears to be the only one who's written about this. He states:

The frequency of brood movement by workers and the location of queen ceils differed between Africanized (Winston, 1979 a) and European races. Only 4 percent of the viable queen brood were moved by the workers in the present study, whereas Winston (1979 a) reported that 47 percent of Africanized brood subsequently reared as queens Were moved following dequeening.

This study has raised a number of questions concerning the events following queen loss in colonies of European bees. For example, no data are available concerning how frequently queens are lost from unmanaged colonies, or what the reasons for such loss are.

Do workers recognize and destroy the queens reared from older larvae ? Why is the frequency of brood movement by workers lower in European than tropical bees, and how commonly is brood moved prior to reproductive swarming ? Are different cues involved in queen-loss versus reproductive swarming ?

Punnett, E. N., & Winston, M. L. (1983). Events following queen removal in colonies of European-derived honey bee races (Apis mellifera). Insectes Sociaux, 30(4), 376-383.
