Expect the "new normal" on the West Coast to be fires in late summer and
fall for the next decade.
It's a perfect storm: climate change resulting in warmer temps and less
moisture in the fuels, more extreme rains (more annual vegetation growth),
coupled with more drought, the invasion of rapid-burning annual grasses
displacing native perennial grasses, as well as a legacy of suppressing
fire in our forests for many years, resulting in much greater fuel loads
than back when the indigenous peoples managed the landscape with fire.
Couple all that with the desire of people to build houses "out in the
country" -- areas where the natural vegetation evolved to burn through
every 5-10 years.

Many people in my area now can't find or afford fire insurance for their
homes.
