I have a yard of colonies with bees that are dying in a way I have not ever
seen before. The bees are moving erratically both out on the ground and on
the bottom board inside the hive. A lot of them are on their backs,
helplessly kicking their legs as if in pain and unable to right themselves.
There doesn't appear to be anything else wrong with them. I have been
prevented by weather and fire events from visiting many of my other yards
this last week, but I think the problem is just in my home back yard. I
collected a few dead bees and put them in the freezer in the hope that the
bee lab will open some day and I can send the bees for analysis. In the
meantime, does anyone have a theory about what is happening? Could it be a
virus (I have had a difficult time keeping my mite loads down in this yard)
or some sort of poisoning? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
