I make "sugar bricks" to provide emergency food for my over-wintering
colonies in Central Maryland. Even though I typically leave 50 - 60 pounds
of honey stores, my bees often feed from the bricks on warm days.
The recipe I have been using calls for adding 15 oz of water and 1/2 tsp
vinegar to 10 pounds of sugar.
Recently BetterBee published this recipe in their newsletter on
www.betterbee.com
14 cups (6.25 pounds) of granulated sugar
1 cup of apple cider vinegar (Get real apple cider vinegar, not
artificially flavored and colored “cider vinegar.” A good brand is Braggs.)
1 ½ teaspoons citric acid powder USP Do not substitute ascorbic acid.
"Both the vinegar and the citric acid powder help invert the sugar to
make it more digestible for the bees."
Do any BEE-L-Digest readers have an opinion of BetterBee's statement that
"Both the vinegar and the citric acid powder help invert the sugar to make
it more digestible for the bees." ?
