A good patent reviewer should flag an idea that is in the common domain or is already patented, but the patent office relies on the submission of the inventer's patent attorney.
I find that the patent folks are not well informed about bees. In addition, nowhere does it say that a patented .... has to work, and it only takes a small tweak to make it different. I've seen a big bump in patents for things that are common knowledge. It seems to be a new game. File a patent on anything that might make money. Don't plan to follow through with a product. Wait till someone else provides the product or service, then sue. It's a scam similar to beekeepers saving on costs by borrowing someone else's hives for rental for pollination.
