I'm surprised that it wasn't included in the paper, but fat body cells have
been shown to move towards a wound in insects. This would be a plus for a
mite--since its food would move towards its mouth!!
Regarding mite survival off of a host, I've seen surprisingly little
information on that. Desiccation would be expected to be an important
issue, especially at low humidity.
