We have 'pure science' and we have 'applied science', and we need to distinguish between scientists and technicians. 
 
Scientists are on the frontier, pushing those frontiers outwards.  Applied scientists, like engineers and tech transfer and maybe extension folks apply and propagate what the former group currently thinks is/might be true and applicable.

Their concepts of science is necessarily different.  One is trying to break or extend  current understandings; the other relies on the solidity of those same memes and puts them to use.

History has shown that few ideas survive in their original form over time
