> Easy solution to the problem of too many male types.
Not just males but all brood. I have seen cannibalism of brood on a pollen deficient flow of Caleys ironbark (Eucalyptus caleyi) here in Australia. It flowers from April onwards which is our late autumn (fall) and early winter and gives water white honey which, when placed in a jar, you can hold up to a newspaper and you can read the paper through the honey. Pollen is scare with this tree and if there are wattles flowering then they can give pollen which does allow the hive to have limited brood.
In this case I saw hives shifted onto Caleys which had around 4 to 6 frames with brood on them. A check a week later there was no brood at all. It had all been cannibalised as there was no pollen coming in.
