*A COMPARISON OF THE PROTEIN QUALITYOF POLLENS FOR GROWTH-STIMULATIONOF THE
HYPOPHARYNGEAL GLANDSAND LONGEVITY OF HONEY BEES,APIS MELLIFERA L.
(HYMENOPTERA : APIDAE)*

*Dandelion pollen (amounts containing 0.625,1.25, 2.5, 5.0, and 10 %
concentrations of protein) was the standardused in the tests. This is the
normal practice in our laboratory(STANDIFER et al., 1960) because, unlike
many pollens gathered and usedby honey bees, it is readily available, is
produced in abundance eachyear, is highly attractive to bees, has an amount
of protein and aminoacid that is relatively adequate for bees (DEGROOT,
1953), is unusuallyhigh in lipid matter compared with most pollens
collected by bees(STANDIFER, 1966 a and 1966 b), and is excellent for
brood-rearing.Sucrose candy prepared by mixing about one part powdered
sucrosewith one part Nulomoline (1), is the normal check diet.*
