>>>.     paraphrasing is all we have to examine our perception of what someone else might mean<><><>.     Back in the early 70's one of my class's principle precepts was to, as a listener, repeat back to the speaker what you 'thought' you heard the speaker say and confirm that you heard the expressed thought(s) correctly.  Only then would you precede with the discussion.
