It can be tricky to remove the collar, but a quick diagnosis can be even made in the field.

Kill a bee, then remove the head and front pair of legs by using a pair of fine tweezers - put one arm of the tweezers behind the front legs and pull forward.  This will expose the tracheae.  A simple hand lens (10x or 20x) will then allow you see any bronzing or blackening.
