Agree that a brood break of a few weeks is theoretically and in
practice not that effective at bringing down varroa numbers, certainly
not in the order of magnitude of effective acaricides, hard or soft.
About five plus years ago there was a study out of Europe in which they
did some elaborate confining of queens, promoting of drone brood
production, and switching various brood combs around in a fairly
elaborate and timed scheme.  The knockdown of varroa was very good from
my recollection.  A good result, but is it worth the cost in elaborate
management?   Cannot recollect the publication.  Maybe Journal of
Apicultural Research.
