In reply to the idea that modern automobile design explains the lack of bugs on late model windshields....what about the grille?? I remember as a kid in the '60's being both fascinated and grossed out by the thick sludge of dead insect matter on car grilles. Don't think grille aerodynamics have changed much.

The fields of my childhood home town used to sparkle with fireflies on summer evenings. June bugs used to cover the screen door at night. No more.
