Good find ... and still, 230 years later, a significant number of beekeepers still consider 'midwinter' treatment (i.e. when the colony is broodless) means anytime in January or even early February. 

I'm just updating a lecture on rational Varroa control and will cite this - thanks.

Here at 56°N very late November and early December are the most reliably broodless periods.
