My understanding of the biology is that once pollen grains are present in the crop they are collected by the mouth-like action of the proventriculus, packaged in a so-called bolus, and passed to the midgut for digestion. Seems to me that pollen digestion proceeds in one direction while nectar can be regurgitated.
