We have at least one, maybe more, of our Master course level students who did reference collections for their own, local areas.  Tomorrow, I'm heading to Bozeman to conduct  a training course for veterinarians.  I'll be back next week and could do a check for others.
For our own research, we find it relatively easy to catalog the most common sources of pollen.  Reed Johnson has done work on a rapid PCR method of characterizing pollen - see the Crop Dust Research Final Technical Report, available on line at https://www.pollinator.org/assets/generalFiles/CDRC-FINAL-REPORT-October-2017.pdf
