Varroa monitoring accelerants
We took BEE-L feedback to heart in recommending OAV and Apivar strips as accelerants in conjunction with sticky boards in our Varroa Action Plan for Newfoundland and Labrador. However, I expect resistance to the use of Apivar given formamidine persistence in wax; this in the current context of beekeepers celebrating their pesticide-free status (relatively speaking given the limited industrial agriculture here, but especially miticides).
In addition to the residue issue, I can see that we will have to explain why alternative mite treatments will not work for early warning mite detection (sentinel apiary program), let alone provide effective mite control. I was reminded of this early this morning when I saw this Hopguard II advertisement appear in my FaceBook News Feed.
