> That seems ... implausible.
It's just a tiny trace, a mere "marker" from the "fallout" from nuclear
tests of the 50s and 60s.
a) Rain dumped on the East Coast brought down C-137 carried east on the jet
stream.
b) Plants in low-potassium soil where these rains fell absorbed and
concentrated the C-137.
c) Some of those plants produced nectar, and the bees further concentrated
that nectar into honey.
The level for "concern" in food is 1200 becquerels per kilogram sez the
government.
They found 0.03 becquerels per kilogram in honey from NC
They found 19.1 becquerels per kilogram in honey from FL
You don't have to even care what a "Becquerel" is to see that this is
another press scare story. Why do they always diss honey? Why not talk
about the amounts in fruits and veggies? Because the honey numbers were
higher, due to the concentration done by the plants and the bees.
If you were born in the 60s, the amount of C-137 out there has decreased by
a factor of at least 10x since you played in the dirt. You swallowed more
C-137 when you were a kid than you will ever encounter again.
There are sooo many more scary things out there to worry about.
