Well primarily I am trying to further my understanding. Swarm prevention is one of big three unsolved problems in practical beekeeping as I see it. Next to solving the varroa problem and creating a true pollensubstitute.
In order to approach the problem from the other side I was wondering if at least the opposite can be done reliably. (Simpson tried, but did not succeed and I havenĀ“t found much other research in this direction).
Secondary reason is queen rearing. Raising queens out of the swarm impulse yields quality queens after all. If it could be scheduled those methods would be a lot more useful.
I remember reading about the Ben Harden method, which uses local congestion + reduction of queen pheromone to induce queen cell production in a queen right colony which results in my understanding in a hybrid between swarm/supersedure queens. http://www.dave-cushman.net/bee/benhardenmethod.html
>I am concerned about some bee associations who have members who think it good to feed up bees, force them to swarm, as a method for re-populating the world's honey bees. In my mind, that's a very bad idea. Best way I can think of to ensure the bee pests (e.g., varroa, nosema) and diseases are spread throughout the surrounding area.
No worries, I am not one of the crazies. (Or at least not one of those crazies). I am a beekeeper, not a beespreader. (well at least not without monetary compensation) Maybe the question would have been better phrased as "induce swarm preparations"
Cheers from Austria/Germany
