I have used upper ventilation for 3 years, and have had the usual variance of survival. 
I now think the propensity of the colony to fly at sub-optimal temperatures  is a factor in Winter survival. I see bees in the snow everywhere. 
At these temps I can’t verify which colonies are contributing the most to this death. 
My plan has been to have the cluster moisture pass up through the sugar boards, making that sugar more available to the cluster. Mayhap I have miscalculated. March should tell the tale.
Not really scientific, but best I can do. Observation. Rinse, repeat, with changes as observation dictates.
