The slatted rack does not interfere. Usually, you can see the OA 'fog'
leaking out from cracks at the upper portion of the hive.

It may start recrystallizing fairly close to the wand, but I suspect it
occurs over a distance of many inches to a few feet. The molecules in the
vapor need to meet to form or grow a crystal, it isn't instant.  The
initial crystals should be very tiny.
