They don't need to be failing.  Out here in the West, there is no robbing
of collapsing colonies.  But there is substantial mite drift between live
colonies, with the mechanism of diffusion creating a net movement of mites
from high-mite colonies to low-mite colonies.  In areas where robbing is
prevalent, such transfer of mites can be even greater.
