<The lack of progress made in the enormous effort expended in pursuit of selecting for a Varroa-resistant/proof honey bee suggests we should focus our energies on other strategies.>

Agreed, and I'll suggest that the strategies should be intensely focused on the mite itself. 
Any proof I needed to convince me of this was research presented a few years ago dispelling the long held and much repeated
belief of hemolymph feeding by the mite.
