Without clipping a queens wing, once the first swarm cell is capped (or
right around then) the hive will swarm. If you clip a wing, the swarm will
return and continue to attempt to swarm until the first virgin emerges,
which takes about a week from when the cell was capped. Hence, clipping a
wing gives you another week to notice a colony is trying to swarm and make
a split. At least in theory.
