Hi Aaron, Seth et al:

Here is a close up of the lifting clamp for our contraption. It is the only
part that is not made of 2x4 wood.

It requires about 6' of 1x1 x 1/8 " 6061 grade aluminum. Steel would be
just as good but heavier. There are four patches of adhesive backed
sandpaper at each end of the clamping bars ( brown in picture ). The
vertical parts are 5/16 redirod going through 1/2 " electrical conduit. The
conduit is there to make the vertical lifting part more resistant to bending
if the weight of the box is not evenly distributed.

In use the horizontal redirod nuts are loosened and the device is dropped
over the hive. The redirod nuts are tightened with a 16 volt portable
drill. Seth suggested that over centre clamps would be quicker to operate
than tightening the nuts and I will try this when, if ever, I get some free
time. This idea is attractive since it would avoid having to keep track of
the drill and the nuts which is time consuming.

In the original picture I show an aluminum bipod which is much too
complicated. I am going to replace it with a wooden one with a 2x4 upright
bolted onto a 2x4 horizontal foot.

Best Regards

Thanks for the pictures Donald. Can you tell us more about the "lifting
device (that) is clamped to the boxes"?

Aaron Morris - awaiting arrival of a new industrial bee blower.
