>After the honey has been removed I place a teaspoonful of thymol crystals in a teabag and place it in the hive on top of the frames in the brood area. It's a lot cheaper than commercial products!

The original work by Dr Mariano Higes showed that placing the thymol in a teabag reduced its efficiency considerably.  He found that it was most effective when placed in a Petri dish.  Try using old honey jar lids!
