First off, I want to thank everyone who contacted me on and off-list.

Sadly, the site and everything we have excavated, including the hides,
other artifacts, and hundreds of buckets waiting to be wet screened are
quarantined due to hazmat issues (asbestos). According to the testing, some
of the asbestos is naturally occurring in the soil, some is man-made. I'm
not allowed to even go near the hides, so we can't even start any type of
conservation. I can't even inspect them to make sure they aren't molding,
etc. The final disposition hasn't been determined, but the entire
assemblage, buckets and all, are likely slated for off-haul to an EPA
approved dump site out of state.

I know of several examples of hazmat arch site mitigation, but if anyone
knows of any projects that they have been successfully completed with this
issue, asbestos in particular, I would be grateful. I am extremely worried
about losing a monumental amount of data (of course, crew safety is first.)
There has to be a way to extract at least some data from all of our field
efforts.

THANK YOU again in advance for any help you can give me on this issue.

Linda
