> Reducing the height of the entrance brings the frames closer to the mesh floor and prevents drone comb being built on the bottom of the frames.

Hi all

In the decades I kept bees in California, I observed every hive (just about) with 3/8" high entrance. The decades here in Upstate NY introduced me to the so-called reversible bottom board which has a 3/8" gap on one side and a 3/4" gap on the other. From some reason people just leave the 3/4" entrance all year round.

I was reading in the old literature about how to prevent mice and they suggested that mice can't get in with 3/8" so I switched to the 3/8" gap year round. I haven't seen any mice nests in the hives since, but I am not sure that's the only reason. But having the smaller gap certainly does no harm. PS. I don't use mesh floors.
