A block of dry ice will kill a well-sealed colony (some enclose in a
garbage bag).
Or block the entrance and pour some ethyl acetate over the top bars and
close the cover.  Low mammalian toxicity, no residues, quick
action--commonly used by entomologists for insect killing jars.
Lacquer thinner also works well, and also flashes off.
Or seal the colony with a strong formic acid treatment.
