I really appreciate this conversation. As to whether rocks feel pain,
thinking so might not be a bad thing. It might help us as humans to tread
more softly upon the earth than we have thus far, supporting the
environment instead of destroying it. The realization that one cannot live
without taking life is a nearly intolerable burden for the heart. Yet
that truth and its sadness born of empathy allows us to not flinch from
what needs to be done, whether it is a scientific experiment involving the
killing of a few bees that might ultimately save many bee lives in the
future, or the destruction of a hive with AFB to protect neighboring
colonies. The extreme views are no refuge. A vegetarian still must kill
plants to live and inadvertently kills many tiny beings with each step s/he
takes, and denial of doing harm only takes away the scalpel of awareness
that might limit harm to necessity.
