Dear all,
We will organize the sixth international Human Science Doctoral Student course: Materiality, Living Memory, Civil Wars, and Difficult Heritage, 3 credits, in the University of Oulu, Finland, in mid-August 2021.
This doctoral student teaching course supports teaching and doctoral training in the human sciences. The course outlines international difficult heritage scholarship, focusing on archaeological and anthropological studies of memory and commemoration of civil wars, places of atrocities, and other conflict related sites. The course will focus on civil wars, like in Ireland, the USA and Finland in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Arctic conflict sites in Finland and Greenland. The course will examine different kinds of materialities and representations of conflicts and how these materialities illuminate, hide, and direct memories of conflict. This focus will emphasize the intersection of difficult conflict heritage and the experience of how Civil Wars are remembered, forgotten, or even silenced.
This course will deepen the student's knowledge of how past civil wars shape living memories and material experience through memorials, monuments, and sites of atrocities. Students will develop tools to interpret how contemporary political groups use past civil war memorials for their political agendas or to foster reconciliation after civil wars.
Short description of the course:
Course includes six (6) hours teaching each day in one-week period in the August 2021, so there will be 30 hours teaching in the course. Teaching will happen two-hour classes before the lunch and four hours at afternoon. Students will give a short max. 15 min paper of their own doctoral research topic during the course.
There is no course fee. Students will be responsible of their own travels, accommodation and living in Oulu during the course. Because of the pandemic, check and follow the travel instructions of the Finnish institute for health and welfare: https://thl.fi/en/web/infectious-diseases-and-vaccinations/what-s-new/coronavirus-covid-19-latest-updates/travel-and-the-coronavirus-pandemic
Maximum participation will be 20 doctoral students.
