Hi Kris,
Depending on the location and years you are interested in, many state GIS
or library sites offer free aerial imagery that is usually available for
download and use in GIS software. For example, in Connecticut, black and
white aerial imagery is available for 1934 and is very high resolution:

Many states now also offer LiDAR and derivatives such as digital elevation
models (DEMs) that are often free and downloadable as well. Here is an
example also from Connecticut:
http://www.cteco.uconn.edu/data/lidar/index.htm
So depending on where you are working, I'd suggest seeing if such sites are
available to you.
