Hi Tim,
It may be easier for you to enforce in an academic context, but one area where it has been difficult to maintain proper practice is in regard to tools. While everyone may have their own equipment, the practice of equipment sharing is so common (‘can I borrow your tape measure for a minute?’), it’s a hard habit to break. Getting techs to claim and use only one shovel and screen or to wipe it down daily is not easy to institute. Even if students work alone in a unit to maintain social distancing, there are times when two or more come together for some aspect of work, such as shading a unit with a tarp for a photo.
These are little things you may have already thought of, but they are also exactly the ones that can be a challenge to actually change. Again, in a academic setting you may have less difficulty setting and maintaining the rules. For example, only one photographer touches the camera and takes the photos, one person sets the sign board, etc. In our situations where we are normally immersed in soil, cleanliness is the farthest from most people’s minds. While gloves help, of course, even that could be an issue. The kind we use for screening are not usually the plastic medical ones that are easier to shred. You might think about having students get the type that are the thick, heavy plastic gardening type, but they can be difficult to wear while writing. Or the thinner plastic medical-type gloves could be left on and the heavy ones for screening, etc., slipped on over them and removed as necessary. Gloves go on and come off so much that leaving them on is going to be a challenge if there’s any bulk to them, anti if there’s no bulk, they are probably going to shred. Probably TMI, but just thought I’d pass it along.
Good luck.

We have a small crew and it's not very difficult to maintain social distancing during fieldwork; however, it is necessary to stay in hotels where we are likely to encounter travelers from many other areas. This is a concern.

Both projects I’m considering for the summer (or was considering and am now trying to see if I can salvage…) are not collaborative with an indigenous or another at-risk community. In my state, the virus-caused mortality rate is much higher among African Americans so far. It will take a lot of research to tease out the issues here, but structural violence has played a role through less access to health care, less food security and quality, and increased exposure to environmental contaminants. I could see how concern for potential impacts among collaborative communities and stakeholder groups to be a powerful concern in calling off fieldwork. My projects might have had public archaeology elements, but not this summer. Attracting crowds to a site simply isn’t possible this summer. Thanks for your thoughts,Tim> On Apr 22, 2020, at 8:01 PM, Denis Gojak <[log in to unmask]> wrote:> > Thanks for sharing Tim > > They seem to largely mirror measures that are emerging in Australian> practice.> One particular issue is where archaeology takes place on Aboriginal> sites, Aboriginal site officers and community members are expected to> be active participants.
