Some years ago I was on a 'battlefield tour' of Normandy, France.  That area has lots of small fields and orchards and dairies with a great variety of produce.  On our return journey, when we stopped for a break, the bus driver took the opportunity to wash the windscreen as it was almost opaque with crushed insects. The next section of the journey to Calais was across more open country with industrial agriculture, vast fields and few hedges.  When we got there the driver cleaned the windscreen again although there were far fewer insects on it.  We crossed the Channel and headed north to Cambridge. When we arrived there was hardly an insect to be seen on the windscreen and no need to clean it.
