I was shown this knot by a fisherman. He said you have to learn it in two directions: First, if someone throws you a rope and you tie a bowline to the end. Second, tying it on a rope you are about to throw to someone else. According to Ashley: "a BOWLINE is one of the most used knots aboard ship."
