Thanks for ideas. I really don’t think this pile grounds had mycelia having been hard frozen all winter. Maybe later. I would rule out water gathering as they were doing that more easily  at numerous puddles. The caffeine should have been leached out by the coffee maker. Like I said, it reminded me of the bees working sawdust from which they presumably get no value. 
But who knows?
