Quote from the author John Carpenter " I agree that very little of the
information in this presentation is readily available in an intelligible
format to beekeepers... but it really ought to be! Viewed from this
perspective, the presentation is not basic at all. I hope that you and
others follow up some of the books and papers that I referred to. Many
of the papers can be downloaded at no cost from the internet if you hunt
around enough. As soon as you do this, you will understand how very
basic my presentation actually is! Advances in genetic understanding are
completely transforming our understanding of the honey bee and it is all
very exciting indeed. All responsible beekeepers must get on board with
this because it will soon dawn on us all that honey bee "genetic
husbandry" is a very crucial component of honey bee husbandry and, as
always "the bees know best". As a global collective, I hope that we all
start focusing on rearing own own "locally-adapted bees" in our own
apiaries and that we do our best to allow natural selection pressures to
do their work. However, the path to that point is likely to be very
choppy indeed, both in terms of short-term colony losses and in terms of
the inevitable ferocity of intellectual debate between beekeepers.
However, the final outcome should be improvement in the quality of honey
bee stock, both at the local and global level."
