Apologies if you are already familiar with the project, but, in 1985, as a
grad student in the public archaeology program at USC, I did a one-semester
assistantship, researching presence of Native American family names in
court records on file in the South Carolina state archives. This was
designed, in part, to support claims for federal tribal recognition by
demonstrating that Native Americans had survived removal in rural South
Carolina, often as members of (so-called) "tri-racial" communities. The
project resulted in a book (USC Press?) by two of the cultural faculty in
the department at that time; authors' names and the title escape my memory.
I would think, and hope, that the notes from that project still exist in
the USC department files.

D. Babson.
