At Apimondia in Dublin in 2005 I attended a lecture in which we were told that, for patent protection reasons, GMO seed producers included anti-biotic 'marker genes' so that if people saved and sold seed from the GMO plants they grew, rather than relying on purchasing annually from the producer, they could be identified and sued.
This was done in Italy. I've forgotten which plant species, but the plants were worked by the bees who brought pollen back to the hives and the genes hopped into the larvae and soon the anti-biotics used to treat colonies for disease no longer worked.
